Matthew Fowler

At just 19 years old, young Matthew Fowler is the perfect storm of the essential elements all singer-songwriters pine for; a flawlessly raw voice, intricately constructed melodies, compelling musicianship, and alluring lyrics that combine to form an overwhelmingly rich sound.  With a style compared to Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, and Ben Howard, Fowler’s talent strongly speaks for itself.  He’ll release his debut album, Beginning on March 25th, which is comprised of songs that he began writing at age 14.

Yesterday American Songwriter premiered the first single off the album entitled “Blankets,” which you can check out HERE.
With no experience in recording or mixing, Fowler set out to make this album from scratch, learning as he went.  He did so in the middle of his family’s kitchen with some of his closest friends.  It was mostly recorded live on a small multi-track recorder using just two microphones.  Through trial, error, and patience he emerged with a set of songs he was proud of, that sounds like you’re right there in the kitchen with him.

You can check out his stunning live performance of “Near” HERE.

Prior to the release, his music has already drawn the attention of many.  Vanscene stated that “Fowler’s raspy vocals and emotion-heavy voice are definite strong points, everything is laced with raw, honest emotion, which makes it extremely difficult not to fall in love with him and his music.”

Matthew Fowler taught himself how to play at age 14 when his parents bought him his first guitar – the same guitar he still uses today.  He developed his performance style at the same age by playing on slow nights at his family’s restaurant.  Set up in the corner without amplification, Fowler learned how to captivate an audience and connect with people.  He eventually graduated from Tuesday nights to busy Saturday nights, then onto bars, venues, and beyond.  Beginning contains the songs he wrote simultaneously along the way, starting with “Don’t Change” (the first song he ever wrote) and the most recent “Blankets.”
