Alt-Rock Band Sink Swim Takes Their Music To New ‘Heights’

By on January 7, 2013

Alternative, pop-punk band Sink Swim returns with Heights, the anticipated follow-up to their well-received debut EP, Elements. Ready to take their local success to the next level, Sink Swim brings usa sophomore release that is bold, fresh and stays true to their signature smooth, yet rugged sound.

Emerging from Thousand Oaks, CA, the band was formed in 2011 by 19 year-old lead vocalist and music junkie, Dane Petersen. Since he was four years old, Petersen participated in school musicals and always auditioned for the singing roles. As he grew older, his relationship with music grew closer. Looking up to artists such as Coldplay, Mayday Parade, Paramore and Underoath, Petersen was keen on developing his vocal, writing and guitar skills. With an abundance of talent and ambition, Petersen created Sink Swim and soon after, added guitarist Jake Lopez and drummer Corey Backer to the lineup. Slightly obsessed with the instrument, Lopez started playing at 14 years old and credits Carlos Santana, Andy McKee and Joe Satriani for his diverse sound. Playing the drums since 12 years old, Backer attended Berklee College of Music for audio production and engineering; he brings a surplus of technical know-how to the group. Complete with talented musicians and behind the scenes expertise, Sink Swim was all geared up to start recording their first EP.

Satisfied with their final product, the trio released their debut EP Elements in June of 2012. The EP garnered favorable reviews in the US and overseas, launching Sink Swim as one of iHeartRadio’s Artists-to-Watch and Music Connection Magazine’s national list of the 100 Hottest Unsigned Bands. “The UK had better watch out as Sink Swim is ready to burst on the scene and by the sounds of this record, they will make quite a splash!” says UK music blog, Room Thirteen.

With the band’s latest effort Heights, Petersen has perfectly laid together heartfelt melodies over a bed of flaring pop punk-influenced instrumentation. The first single, titled “Pull Together,” features Alexa San Roman, singer from the Long Island band, Love, Robot. Full of honest lyrics, soaring vocals and melodic twists and turns, the energy-driven song is all about becoming a better person and essentially pulling it together to make a better life. The band recently released a music video for “Pull Together” to accompany the single. Another track from the EP is the electric “Tides,” which sees Petersen boasting post-punk influenced screaming, while the title track “Heights” features a heart-wrenching chorus carried by warm guitar chords. The EPwas recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bob Curtin at The Gravity Room in Simi Valley, CA.

As Sink Swim prepares for the release of the new EP, fans can rest assured that Heights is simply a musical evolution that stays true to their motto- Love endlessly, fearlessly.
