Art punks Cinema Cinema tour East Coast, Europe; recording with Martin Bisi

By on October 12, 2013

Cinema Cinema, the full-throttle, experimentally-inclined rock duo from Brooklyn is playing select East Coast dates in preparation for a European tour with noted producer/engineer Martin Bisi. They go into Bisi’ BC Studios in Brooklyn  with Martin co-producing, engineering and  mixing the third Cinema Cinema album on Dec 27th. The band’s most recent release is the single, “50 Foot Queenie” a PJ Harvey cover c/w their own “Adult Themes.” I’m hoping you might be interested in covering them via feature or singles review. Let me know if you need music.

Cinema Cinema was formed in Brooklyn by cousins Ev Gold (vocals & guitars) and Paul Claro (drums). Their second full length release is MANIC CHILDREN & the SLOW AGGRESSION recorded with legendary producer/engineer Don Zientara, renowned worldwide for his work with Minor Threat, Fugazi, Bad Brains, & Bikini Kill among others.  The album was released on the Lumiere Label in 2012.
“50 Foot Queenie” was originally recorded for the From 93 To Infinity compilation, being released in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of New Jersey’s Dromedary Records label. Cinema Cinema were originally approached about play the label’s annual show benefitting the “Roots & Wings” foundation: Roots & Wings provides young adults who age out of the foster care system in New Jersey with safe housing, educational support, counseling, and life skills in order to empower them toward self-sufficiency. After playing the sold-out benefit show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ they were asked to contribute a track to From 93 To Infinity the with all the material appearing being covers of  songs that originally appeared in 1993. After considering Fugazi’s “Facet Squared” and “Heart Shaped Box” byNirvana they chose “50ft queenie” as an opportunity to stretch as artists and connect with the strong female artistic energy of the song’s composer.

As always, Cinema Cinema’s sound is based on shattered & heavily-treated guitars pounded into focus by a primal assault of beats and shifted tempos. A vocal delivery, honest to its bloody, shredded core, forces the attention of listeners. Not a moment of pause prevails; but a feverish journey from one song structure to the next weaves incessantly throughout the performance.

Having formed in 2008 and released their debut LP, EXILE BABY, Cinema Cinema decided do 100 shows 2010. Touring that extensively taught the band countless invaluable lessons. Functioning fully under the D.I.Y. umbrella helped to further instill a serious minded work ethic. EXILE BABY would go on to crack the CMJ Top 200. By middle 2010, the duo had crafted almost a double album’s worth of new material. The band headed to legendary DC punk recordist Don Zientara’s Arlington, VA-based studio at the end of 2010 with big ideas. The sessions yielded close to 80 minutes of music and the duo released three songs worth as the SHOOT THE FREAK EP in 2011, as an introduction to the frantic, mind-bending music they’d created followed by MANIC CHILDREN & the SLOW AGGRESSION in 2012.

They coupled this release with their customary relentless touring, which included opening for Greg Ginn on three separate runs through the Southwest late that same year, having first toured with him on the East Coast mid 2010. During 2012 they opened for Ginn & The Royal We on several national tours including one through the SouthWest that saw them stopping over at SST’s Texas studios and recording an extended session with Greg sitting in on bass yielding some 90 minutes of dark, intense, heavy music.

They continued to tour in their own right through the Fall. That Fall Hurricane Sandy dumped 5 feet of toxic Gowanus sludge into their rehearsal space, filled at the time with all their gear; two week later, they were back on the road with borrowed gear!
