Following a sold-out Australian headline tour, opening slots with Florence and The Machine, Editors, and Midlake, and a wildly successful run at SXSW 2012, the Melbourne-based duo of Big Scary, Tom Iansek (lead vocals, electric guitar, keys) and Joanna Syme (drums, backing vocals) have set their sites on the U.S. announcing plans to release their first studio full-length “Vacation” and North American tour later this year.
Specific tour dates, U.S. label partner, and a worldwide album release date (“Vacation” is currently only out in Australia) will be announced shortly. In the meantime the band has released the debut single “Falling Away” as a free MP3 download. The track is a stunning piano-driven ballad inspired by the books Iansek was reading while writing the record.
“I was reading a lot about philosophy and spirituality while writing these songs,” says Iansek. “And I started thinking about learning about life and life’s lessons through books (and music) versus first hand experience, and the difference between the two.”
Regularly lauded as one of Australia’s brightest young bands, Big Scary has spent the past 18 months racking up the kind of success most musicians’ dream of. Following the worldwide release of their “Four Seasons EP” and the Australian release of “Vacation” – which dominated Australian sales charts for most of 2011 – Iansek and Syme were nominated for 2011 Breakthrough Artist Of The Year by the Australian Independent Record Association and “Vacation” was nominated for 2011 Album Of The Year by Australia’s Triple J Awards.
In the U.S. the band has seen high profile synchs with a national AT&T commercial and on multiple episodes of Grey’s Anatomy. Big Scary has received early praise from music industry insiders and media such as Brooklyn Vegan, We Are Hunted, Parasites and Sycophants, Large Hearted Boy, and CMJ. Idolator recently featured Big Scary as their #1 pick of the 12 Up-And-Coming Pop Acts From Down Under, calling them “a genre-defying duo [who keep] fans and critics guessing by switching between garage rock, dreamy piano-pop and everything in between with uncanny ease.” An observation that rings true upon first listen to “Vacation.”
