The “Battle of the Bays” tour makes its second stop at Shaka’s Live in Virginia Beach and brings the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal legends Exodus, the revered Florida death band Obituary and Texas thrashers Power Trip for an evening of metal insanity. The German thrash metal band Dust Bolt had to drop off the first four dates of the tour due to flight issues after Hurricane Irma. A number of fans were disappointed by the news considering it is the band’s first North American tour.
Power Trip supporting their February 24, 2017 effort “Nightmare Logic” kicked the night off with “Soul Sacrifice” as they played most of “Nightmare Logic” with the exception of “Heretic’s Fork” and “Conditioned to Death” from “Manifest Decimation”. The younger members of the audience pushed their way to the front to throw down and share the mike with Riley.
Exodus was the band that most of the crowd wanted to see and they wasted no time getting the crowd fired up as they started their set with “The Ballad of Leonard and Charles” from “Exhibit B: The Human Condition” and followed with “Blood In Blood Out” and “Iconclasm”. Steve “Zetro” Souza asks the crowd if it is OK to play old school material for the rest of the set to which the crowd responded with a collective “YES!!!!” The rest of the set included songs from “Fabulous Disaster” and “Bonded By Blood”. Zetro, Gary Holt and Lee Altus had fun playing with the crowd and mugging for cell phone photos with the front row while the pit was going full tilt. Exodus ended their set with “Strike of the Beast” to wild applause.
Obituary, also touring in support of their self-titled March 17th, 2017 started with “Brave” to a slightly thinner crowd but enthusiastic crowd. Like Exodus, Obituary played mostly older material which was greatly appreciated by the audience who headbanged and moshed, ending the evening with “Slowly We Rot”.
For a week that included the Metal Alliance Tour in Richmond and Devildriver at Shaka’s the night before and the last Shadow Woods Metal Fest being held outside of Baltimore, the show was nearly sold out. For those who made it out got to see and hear an incredible show.
