Exclusive: Motion City Soundtrack Talks “True Romance” in new Webisode

Alt-rock mainstays Motion City Soundtrack are returning on June 12 with their highly anticipated fifth studio album, “Go,” and according to guitarist Josh Cain, the band “feels fresh and ready to go.” Following last month’s premiere of lead single “True Romance,” the Minneapolis group is offering a new webisode explaining the origin of the shimmering pop track, as well as a free download of the single.

In the webisode, Cain explains how he and the rest of the band (singer Justin Pierre, bassist Matt Taylor, drummer Tony Thaxton and keyboardist Jesse Johnson) slowly pieced together what would become the most accessible song on “Go.” “We pulled it up and Matt’s like, ‘Oh wait, I have this little snippet of it that I recorded you on the bus playing acoustic, and then I added a bunch of things to it,'” Cain recalls. “He played it for me, and I was like, ‘Okay, that’s the right energy. That sounds like the song that this should be.'”

Like the creation of “True Romance,” “Go” also came together gradually, with the newly unsigned band (MCS parted ways with Columbia Records after releasing its fourth album, “My Dinosaur Life,” on the major label in 2010) recording during the first half of 2011 and taking a few months to mix the album. “It was kind of a crazy long period, because we were talking to labels and trying to figure out what we wanted to do with it,” Cain tells Billboard.com.
After finishing the album and giving multiple labels a preview of the rough mixes, Motion City Soundtrack decided to once again talk to Epitaph, the label that released the group’s first three full-lengths including its debut album, “I Am the Movie,” in 2003. “We finally had our meeting with Epitaph and were like, ‘This is the place we should be. This is our family — there’s way too much history. Let’s go back and put out a record together,” says Cain.
After performing at the Bamboozle fest earlier this month, Motion City Soundtrack will embark on a brief U.S. headlining tour beginning June 14 in San Diego. The group will then head overseas for a slew of dates in Asia this summer before returning for a long headlining trek in the fall.
