It doesn’t take long after hearing the self-titled debut full-length from BRAND NEW TRASH to realize the Bay Area group has equally studied its roots rock and lo-fi rock record collections thoroughly – creating a new style in the process, “Trash Pop,” which merges raw rock with stick-in-your-brain melodies.
And the group, led by brothers Vince and Jimmy Dewald, who share guitar and bass duties, has created an instant buzz with the album’s first single, a must-hear cover of the Tupac Shakur classic, “Brenda’s Got A Baby,” which sounds like a late night jam session held between Neil Young and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Brand New Trash, the album, will be released Nov. 20, 2012.
“Brenda’s Got A Baby” does what great cover songs do: It’s different than the original and has a purpose to hearing it in this new light. Beyond the social commentary, the listener cannot be but amazed with the lyricism. For those unfamiliar with the tune, “2Pac” comes across as one of the great American songwriters, a place he deserves to hold despite not being considered so in some circles because of strict genre-defining roles.
The song already has received raves from TheBayBridged.com, which called it a “Dirty roots rock interpretation of the slain rapper’s meditation on teen pregnancy, replete with Tom Petty-inspired harmonica and plenty of distorted guitars to go around.”
But don’t be misled into thinking that BRAND NEW TRASH is a “covers only” band, as the aforementioned trash pop direction is on display throughout its debut, especially on such standout originals as the album-opening “If You Let Me,” as well as “Alana” and “Civil War.” And although the San Francisco CD Release Party will be the group’s last appearance of 2012, next year will see the quartet hitting the road hard (with several videos to be filmed from their debut, as well).
In addition to the Dewald brothers, BRAND NEW TRASH is comprised of Kevin Alan Walters (drums) and Ebony Towner (drums, keyboards). The Dewalds’ roots originally lay in Indiana, before setting up shop in San Francisco, and hooking up with Walters and Towner. After spending a few years in the popular local act Buxter Hoot’n, BRAND NEW TRASH is the Dewald brothers’ main focus now, and they’re immediately turning heads with their new outfit.
“The music allows for chaos but is not centered around it,” Jimmy says, “And with that the songs become more expressive and in many ways more spontaneous. Our vision has become more defined with Brand New Trash so that now we think the music is at its most honest and at the same time the most accessible to the listener. We want to keep an intimate living room experience part of the music.”
BRAND NEW TRASH will be launching its aforementioned debut album with a record release performance November 15th, at 9:00pm at San Fran’s Bottom of the Hill (along with performances by two other acts – the Blank Tapes and Coo Coo Birds).
But in the meantime, get acquainted with “Trash Pop” throughout the raw and rocking self-titled debut, Brand New Trash.
