Canadian indie-pop outfit Groenland announce ‘The Chase’ on Bonsound Records

Following the hugely successful North American release of their debut album, ‘The Chase’, the Canadian indie-pop outfit Groenland have announced the release of a deluxe edition and a European tour.  The band describe their sound as ‘warm orchestral indie pop tunes with a touch of electro’.

‘The Chase’ is a fearless presentation, a soundtrack to the emotional state.  Each track represents a different mood, a different place – a unique state of mind. From folkie ukulele riffs, to dark sweeping (mini) orchestral passages to experimental electro and drums, this album has it all – and the vocal range of Sabrina Halde is quite simply staggering.  In ‘Our Last Shot’, ‘La Pieuvre’ and ‘Immune’ she shows off some pretty powerful hooks reminiscent of Sia but in tracks such as ’26 Septembre’ and ‘Daydreaming’ she delivers the soulful mellifluousness of Feist.

‘Immune’ is the biggest song on the album, a ballad of heart breaking, soul tempered with hard hitting moody strings and keys.  However, it is the composition of the song that truly stands this song apart from any credible likeness.

‘Our Hearts Like Gold’ is a jazz piano and singer number.  Halde’s seductive breathy crooning encourages a sense of intimacy that promotes the feeling that the listener is in a private audience of one, this song is for you and you alone.

‘Superhero’ opens cheerfully with a ukulele and an accordion seemingly serenading each other as two birds in a tree, and then the track awakens and Halde with an almost classic 50’s jazz vocals steps out into this garden scene. In contrast to the delicate opening the song crashes out in a crescendo of sound, with even some sax thrown into the mix.

New Deluxe Edition LP to be released on 14th May 2015 via Bonsound

“… Think Adele on a bender with half of Arcade Fire along for the ride and everyone is feeling jazzy and you’ve got the pulsing Superhero or the tango vibe of The Things I’ve Done. Solid.” – The Province

“[…] foot-stomping indie-pop fun.” – Ride The Tempo

Lots of albums are fun and lots of albums are mature, but few strike the balance of youthful exuberance and sophistication that is found on The Chase.’  (Snobsmusic)
