Montreal-based producer CFCF (Mike Silver), has debuted a new video for ‘Beyond Light‘ at BlackBook. Taken from his forthcoming sophomore album, Outside, his first full LP since 2009’s beat driven Continent, the trippy, abstract clip was co-produced by Derrick Belcham and Ruby Kato Attwood. The duo cites a mixed bag of influences, including Man Ray, Stan Brakhage, and Anton Senkov.
“Ruby and I created everything in the video from chemicals, housewares and toys we bought on a trip to a local department store,” Belcham says. “Each element is the result of an experiment in which a light source, an ‘effector’ and a subject were aligned in series with the RED Scarlet camera. Through a series of those experiments, we built up a palette of colors, textures and perceived symbols that we then edited them into a narrative series matching our interpretation of the song.”
Silver has spent the last year on a pair of EPs that explored the patterns and emotions that can be drawn from layered repetition, most recently, his Music For Objects EP. Many of the tracks on Outside were written while he was traveling on buses and trains, usually between Montreal where he recently appeared at the renowned Montreal Jazz Festival, New York or Toronto. ‘Beyond Light’ follows first single ‘Jump Out of the Train,’ featuring Active Child, and Outside also contains Silver’s excellent cover of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s “Strange Form of Life,” which he’s reworked into a lush moment of visceral, heartbreaking sadness. The album is set for release October 22nd on Paper Bag Records/Dummy (pre-order here).
