The first installment of Eamon McGrath’s serialized album, Exile Part 1, channeled his mid-80s American melodic indie rock vibe to critical acclaim in Canada and overseas. Now McGrath is set to release Exile Part 2 on March 11, which finds its roots in the early 90s grunge movement and doomy, Sabbath inspired blues-rock.
Part 2’s opener, “Canadian Shield”, is a guitar-laden vision of uncharted heartland, documenting a nail-biting journey through that long stretch of wilderness between Toronto and Winnipeg. “Paper Boats” is a nod to McGrath’s love for Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse at their most brooding and psychedelic. The stand-alone solo acoustic performance on the installment, “Running From the Cops”, showcases McGrath’s tender songwriting ability.
“It’s an age-old song about being haunted by memories, and about that uneasy feeling when they start to creep back into the present time after you’ve thought that you’d let go of them,” says McGrath. “I’d been waiting for years to get what I thought would be a golden take, and then finally it happened, a weekend after coming back from a European tour and tracking what I’d imagined was going to be demos, and it all just kind of finally came together.”
The remainder of Exile was recorded live off the floor by Rob Higgins (Change of Heart, Dearly Beloved) at his Phoebe St. studio in downtown Toronto with Peter Dreimanis and Danny Miles (July Talk) playing lead guitar and drums respectively, and Clay Jones (Styrofoam Ones, Beneath Augusta) on bass.
It’s an unusual way to release an album, but McGrath has realized that nothing better marks the end of an era than a change of approach. Released over a nine-month period all three parts of Exile will culminate in a full-album vinyl release in summer. “Serializing an album lets you extend a touring schedule over the course of how ever long you want to put it out,” says McGrath. “You can play the songs over the course of the year and have it still feel fresh and exciting. And when you have an artist like myself that is addicted to living on the road, staggering releases like this will only serve to remedy that desire.”
McGrath will feed his addiction by returning to Europe in April for string of tour dates. Exile Part 2 is available on March 11 via all digital retailers, select independent music stores, and on the road at Eamon McGrath concerts.
