Grapefruit
Freeway Romantics

Charlie Salas Humara has been a presence in the Portland music world for over a decade, first with his band The Planet The and then with his electro-freak persona Panther (Kill Rock Stars, who toured with Ratatat at least once). But now it seems time has calmed the man, at least a little. While not performing with his excellent band Sun Angle, Charlie spends and extends his musical prowess to the instrumental synth wanderings of Grapefruit. Following an excellent release earlier this year, “Freeway Romantics” is as sci-fi as it gets. Pulsing and vibrating, like hearing lights pass through crystal. As much outside as it is in. Is the freeway out in space, or is it in your mind?

(Tracks: Hyphen Sunrise, Freeway Romantics, Return To Never, Midnight Transactions, Maniac cop, The God’s Themselves, Sequence, The Pink’s Quieter, ZZ Cops)

Mental Theo
West Coast Mix 01
Gnar Tapes is extremely delighted to present one of funnest tapes we’ve ever had the chance to put together. Dutch “GabberDJ Mental Theo (aka Theo Nabuurs) has been making hardcore electronic dance music since the early 90s. After scoring a few big Happy Hardcore hits in Europe with their songs “Wonderful Days” and “Stars” alongside fellow countryman Charly Lownoise, Theo continued on to become a VJ on the European version of MTV. During the late 90s he hosted his own European MTV show called “Mental Theo On The Road”, in which he visited various nightclubs across Europe interviewing and interacting with partygoers, including a “Spring Break Special” report on the American club scene in Florida. He has continued to host various music and party oriented programs on TV and continues to present on Dutch dance radio. “West Coast Mix 01” is the result of how educational and fun the Internet has made cassette culture. A unique mix of a Dutch Hardcore and Gabber records and remixes made specifically for Gnar Tapes. This cassette is high energy and an instant win for anyone with a fondness for techno.
