Haunted by NYC’s Rachael Sage

By on May 21, 2012

“Genuine talent…Sage has a knack for writing melodies that will break your heart without making you feel manipulated in the process… Where there’s poignancy there’s also subtlety, unforced passion and knowing observation.”
— RollingStone.com

“Enigmatic New York singer-songwriter Rachael Sage returns this May with her 10th career album releasing via her own successful indie label, MPress Records. Haunted By You (May 22) is a captivating song cycle about passion, desire and romance…”
— PopMatters

“Sage is one of those frighteningly diverse talents who would easily make the rest of us feel inadequate if she wasn’t so darn charming.”
— The Washington Post

It takes guts to deviate from a tried and tested method. Especially if that method has led you down the road of artistic success and garnered a bevy of awards, including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and several Independent Music Awards and OUTMusic Awards. But the woman who radiates what MOJO Magazine calls “warm, intelligent…NY indie charm” has never been short on bravery or the instinct for innovation. Aside from being an internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter who performs more than 150 shows per year, Sage is also a producer and record label founder. And now, on her tenth studio album, Haunted By You (release 5/22/2012 on MPress Records), rather than penning tunes on the piano (her primary instrument), Sage has opted to pick up a guitar because in her own words, “I was scared of it and took that as a cue…I gave myself a pass to make mistakes that would hopefully yield something more visceral.” The gamble has paid off, as evidenced by recent press from PopMatters and the Huffington Post, among others. In addition, Sage has just completed a standing-room-only performance at the famed Lincoln Center for their highly touted “Meet The Artist Series” and finished her first art show in a decade at NYC’s ultra hip Think Gallery (running through the end of June).

Ms. Sage is a tremendously talented songwriter whose lyrics call out for close inspection and easily bear the banner of poetry, and the result of her step into the unknown is that her finely crafted words have found a new, string-laden environment in which to thrive. Haunted By You is a passionate collection of self-produced songs unified in part by the artistic desire to plumb the depths of what it means to fall in and out of love. Perhaps more importantly, the album shimmers with unflagging honesty and sincerity that is both self-reflective and confessional, yet manages to evade all the usual clichéd pitfalls—no small feat considering the heart is her subject matter of choice.
This time around, in addition to her always impressive touring band, The Sequins, Rachael Sage is joined by a number of excellent fellow songwriters and musicians, including Dar Williams, Mike Visceglia (Suzanne Vega), Lucy Woodward, Katie Costello, David Immergluck (Counting Crows), all of whom contribute their own unique touch to the album. In addition, Haunted by You benefits from the mixing of Grammy® Winner Kevin Killen (U2, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel). The album is both a reinvention and continuation in the evolution of an exceptional musician, and showcases lush arrangements of brilliant chamber pop. Fans of Bareilles, Carol King, The Fray, Adele, Sarah McLachlan and Rufus Wainwright will be particularly drawn to the sonic delights the inimitable Rachael Sage has to offer.
