Joel Hoekstra of Whitesnake/Trans Siberian Orchestra!
HHM: You have a long and distinguished music career. What was your big break?
Joel Hoekstra: I really think my career has been built on a series of small breaks. That’s typically the way it actually works in the music business.
HHM: How has your recording process evolved over the years?
Joel Hoekstra: Well, it all depends on what I’m working on. That’s a hard question to answer. I always feel like I’m learning and getting better though.
HHM: Who are some of your musical influences?
Joel Hoekstra: I started out into hard rock bands like AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Scorpions. Then melodic bands like Boston, Journey, progressive bands like Yes and Rush, classic bands like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd and then of course all of the great guitar albums I grew up on from players like Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Joel Satriani, etc..
HHM: What was the first record you ever bought?
Joel Hoekstra: AC/DC For Those About to Rock
HHM: Who are some of today’s artists that you enjoy?
Joel Hoekstra: I have no idea. I’m usually working on music and am not “hip” at all. I’m very much a classic rock guy these days.
HHM: What is your proudest moment as a musician?
Joel Hoekstra: Making this far in life making a living at it. I’m very blessed. There are lots of fantastic players out there that have struggled to build careers. I don’t take it for granted.
HHM: Can you tell us of any New Albums or tours in the near future?
Joel Hoekstra: I played on a few songs on Michael Sweet’s upcoming solo album. I’m about to head to South America and Japan with Whitesnake and I’m hoping to wrap up the year playing with Trans Siberian Orchestra on their Winter Tour.
HHM: Do you have any final words that you’d like to share with your fans?
Joel Hoekstra: Just thanks for the support! As I said, I’m blessed to be doing this!
