I Am Nation are gearing up for a prosperous summer in the footsteps of the Vans Warped Tour as they head out to promote the release of their new single “I Never Used Training Wheels” and their songwriting mindset of the months to come. The band have stated that they will be performing acoustic sets in light of the tour and are currently writing for their next album and planning the framework for their official music video for the recent single– a follow up to their debut EP, Liminality, released in May 2012. Produced by Kevin Gates (Never Shout Never, The Ready Set, Plug in Stereo), “I Never Used Training Wheels” features the signature pop static charge of Gates’ reputable alumni, providing I Am Nation with a solid foundation for a successful trip alongside the 2013 Vans Warped Tour.

The Kansas City alternative quartet, I Am Nation, has superseded the depths of typecast Midwest indie folk and has propelled forward in the pioneer footsteps of decade favorites. Though conjuring the melodic and soul-driven likes of Jimmy Eat World, Panic! At the Disco, and Taking Back Sunday—the four-piece are well aware of where they are, how they got there, and the places they want to go. Drummer David Gonzales humbly admits, “We don’t make fans, we make friends.”

Formed in 2008, I Am Nation is comprised of basement dwellers with summer festival attitudes. Having self-released their 2012 debut studio EP Liminality, produced by Kevin Gates (Never Shout Never, The Ready Set, Plug In Stereo), the inter-band camaraderie overrides the face value assumptions often facing the pop-ridden genre. The fact of the matter is—they just want to have fun. But with every ounce of fun comes purpose. Vocalist and guitarist Liz Greub explains, “I don’t even know where exactly I wish to take these things, but I want our music to be a voice—not just some other band that plays as entertainment. This all sounds like every other band, but screw it. I want to rock the boat, socially.”

Socially speaking, I Am Nation does have a few things going for them. While front-women are no rarity to the alternative realm, the group manages to feature Megan Gladbach on lead guitar, providing the band with the certain gender diversity that the scene longs for. Gonzales and bassist, Wyatt Lemmon, balance the dynamic with their comedic boyish charm and hungry rhythmic backbone. Well beyond surface appearance, I Am Nation is also known for the continued participation in fundraising events such as Rock 4 Hope, an annual benefit concert sponsored by Shawnee Mission West High School in effort to contribute to various local charities. The group, seemingly untainted by the harrows of the music industry, is gearing up for the May 5th release of their perhaps most refined single to date, “I Never Used Training Wheels;” a label-worthy segue into the next chapter.

When not conquering the soundboards and stage monitors –musically speaking– you can find I Am Nation tracing the patterns of their backseat– ice cream cone in hand, brushing up on their UNO skills, and reminiscing on the last photo capturing the audience singing along in perfect unison—the way any young and thriving band should.
