I Heart Inc charitable foundation: Rachel Maddow, Arrica Rose

By on June 23, 2011

I HEART Inc is an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization begun by
LA indie musicians Arrica Rose, Abby Kincaid, and Laura Martin. While
touring in the southwest, the girls were inspired by fellow musician Eva
Blayblock who was creatively using her talents and connections to raise
money for charitable organizations in her hometown, Albuquerque, NM.
Excited about the possibility of re-creating Eva’s success in Los Angeles,
the girls began brainstorming ideas for what would become I HEART. The
first I HEART project would be The Bombshell Alliance 1940’s pin-up girl
calendar and compilation.

I HEART Inc is currently run by founder Arrica Rose who has expanded upon
the original project, coordinating events not only in Los Angeles but also
in NYC, San Francisco and Austin at SXSW.

The motto: Do what you can with where you are and what you’ve got. This
philosophy empowers independent artists and their communities by
encouraging artists to use the resources at their disposal (their
creativity and their fan base) to help raise funding for charitable causes
through creative projects and events. In the process of raising awareness
and funding, I HEART also exposes participating artists to new fans as
well as fellow artists who are utilizing their creativity to inspire
change locally and globally. I HEART Inc has been fortunate to enlist an
amazing team of sponsors and supporters including Willie Nelson, Crosby
Stills and Nash, Iron & Wine/Sub Pop Records, Fran Drescher, Rachel
Maddow, Jackson Browne, Bird and the Bee/Inara George, Jack White, Jesca
Hoop, Smart Water, Martin Guitars, Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios,
Radio Hill, Hunnypot, Lurssen Mastering, Hotel Cafe and many more.

I HEART Projects

The first project was The Bombshell Alliance, a 1940’s style pin-up
calendar and accompanying compilation CD featuring Los Angeles based
female musicians. All profits from the sale of the calendar were donated
to Sojourn Services for Battered Women and their Children. Additionally,
I HEART used profits earned from the calendar’s launch party to create a
one-year scholarship for a young girl to attend Silverlake Conservatory of
Music. The sold-out launch party was held at The Hotel Café in Hollywood,
CA, on the evening of November 15 2007. I HEART also created a 2010
version of The Bombshell Alliance calendar with a coinciding west coast
tour to support its release.

I HEART’s second project was The Indie-Rock Easel where indie darlings who
moonlight as visual artists turned their versatile talents into limited
edition t-shirt designs for charity. Set in a gallery-esque heat press
store Red Heat, The Indie-Rock Easel was a night of live music, an open
bar, and a chance to buy limited edition t-shirt creations pressed while
you watch. All profits from the sale of the t-shirts were donated to
Sojourn Services for Battered Women and their Children and Silverlake
Conservatory of Music.

I HEART’s 2008 holiday parties included I HEART NYC Coalition Against
Hunger Benefit @ The Zipper Factory and an I HEART L.A. Rescue Benefit @
The Roxy.

I HEART Austin @ SXSW 2009 was an evening of live music, drink specials,
raffles (autographed Willie Nelson Martin Guitar, free recording session
at Electric Lady Studios & much more). All proceeds raised were donated to
Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Live Performances by: Local
Natives, Arrica Rose, WAZ, The Union Line, Butterfly Boucher, Miranda Lee
Richards & Austin’s own: Murdocks & Vallejo Sponsored by: Electric Lady
Studios, Martin Guitars, Radio Hill Recorders, Lurssen Mastering, Junk
Food, Jakprints, Strait Music, One 2 One, Vitamin Water, Cultural
Operations, Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin, Gershwin Hotel in NYC, Uchi
Sushi, & Ashley McCue Photography.

The Million Dollar Revival I HEART Inc’s Million Dollar Revival was a
benefit for Fran Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer Movement. The Million Dollar
Revival was be a vaudevillian evening true to the era of old-time variety
shows, a Los Angeles style melting pot of live music and comedy, an unholy
marriage of acts one would never imagine gracing the same stage. This one
of a kind event held December 13th 2009 at the historic Million Dollar
Theatre raised funding for low income, uninsured women of Los Angeles to
receive free women’s cancer screening tests (as well as free follow-up
care) right in their own neighborhoods. Hosted by Fran Drescher the event
featured performances by Jackson Browne, Olivia Newton-John, Inara George
(The Bird and the Bee), Beth Nielsen Chapman, Whispertown2000, Charlyne
Yi, Arrica Rose, Chris Pierce, Caitlyn Crosby, Stilt World, special guest
Rosie O’Donnell and more!

$1 Difference is an ongoing project where artists help to raise funding
for various causes by donating an unreleased song (demos, B sides, live or
upcoming release tracks). Fans pay what they can – $1 being the minimum.
Participating artists have included Mike Watt, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte
Martin, Sara Melson, Abby Travis and so the list grows.
