Music industry veteran Madelyn Scarpulla has been named General Manager, Loud & Proud Records. The announcement was made today by Loud & Proud Owner and President Tom Lipsky, to whom Scarpulla reports. Scarpulla’s responsibilities in her new post will include designing marketing, sales and promotion strategies and originating creative material and content for the entire diverse Loud & Proud roster, as well as managing label operations, liaising with RED Distribution, artists and managers. She will strategize directly with Lipsky to lead Loud & Proud into the future as a multi-genre artist-friendly label environment for veteran and emerging artists of all levels and status.
Of the appointment, Lipsky commented, “There is no one that I trust and respect more than Madelyn Scarpulla. We share a common vision of the role of the record label today as a service partner with artists, fueling their overall business and enhancing their relationship with fans via innovative marketing of their new music. I am excited to have the opportunity to work hand in hand with Madelyn as we shape the future of Loud & Proud.” Scarpulla added, “Tom and I have been a stellar team for over a decade during our time together at Sanctuary and Roadrunner Records. Joining him in the next incarnation of Loud & Proud Records is a natural and obvious move for me. I am thrilled to continue our excellent working relationship while we advance our shared belief that artists come first, as they are the core of our business. We will work together to foster an artist-friendly, open, honest and creative environment so that our artists thrive and always have a home for their art.” Scarpulla was most recently Senior Vice President of Marketing & Creative Services at Roadrunner Records, a position she held for seven years.
Scarpulla began her career as an Assistant Program & Promotions Director at WIYY Radio in Baltimore, MD in 1985. She transitioned to Polygram Records in Washington, DC, where she held the position of Mid-Atlantic Promotion Manager before relocating to New York City as Product Manager for PolyGram where she worked with KISS, Tears For Fears, The Scorpions, Def Leppard, Ugly Kid Joe and many more.
In 1991, Scarpulla left the record company side for management as Marketing Director at Artists Services Management/Horizon Entertainment, where she worked with John Mellencamp and then managed KIX. In 1994, Scarpulla moved back to a label as Director, Sales & Marketing for Arista Records. Then she returned to PolyGram/Mercury as Senior Director, Marketing & Artist Development where key projects included Bon Jovi, KISS (again), INXS, Rusted Root, 311 and more. In 2000, Scarpulla was named Senior Director, Marketing for Columbia Records (Aerosmith, The Jayhawks, Chris Botti) and two years later became Vice President, Marketing for Atlantic Records (Led Zeppelin, Phil Collins, Stone Temple Pilots and Shinedown).
In 2004, Scarpulla was named Senior Vice President, Marketing for Sanctuary Records Group, where she reported to Tom Lipsky on such diverse projects as KISS (yet again), Robert Plant, Morrissey, The Allman Brothers, Tegan & Sara. She also oversaw Music World Entertainment releases such as Ray J, Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang. Scarpulla left Sanctuary in 2006 to become Senior Vice President of Marketing & Creative Services at Roadrunner Records, where she oversaw product management, online marketing, web development, publicity, sales, creative services, video production and promotion and licensing for the label’s diverse roster of 40+ artists including Nickelback, Slipknot, Korn, Stone Sour, Killswitch Engage, Theory of a Deadman, Young The Giant and Black Stone Cherry. Scarpulla was also instrumental in signing and marketing artists for the newly created Loud & Proud Records, a Roadrunner joint venture with Tom Lipsky, focusing on veteran artists including Lenny Kravitz, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS (once again), Rob Zombie, Tommy Lee (Methods of Mayhem), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Collective Soul and others.
Scarpulla has a strong commitment to mentorship, making teaching a central tenant of her philosophy. At Mercury, PolyGram, Columbia, Atlantic and Sanctuary she groomed several assistants, coordinators, and interns into successful music industry executives, many of whom hold VP titles today. Scarpulla is also on the Grammy Awards’ annual screening committee for pop/rock/R&B formats. She is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, New York chapter.
