Ingrid Michaelson’s popular side project ARMY OF 3 today released their debut EP on Cabin 24 Records. ARMY OF 3, a group comprised of Michaelson, producer Chris Kuffner and director Dylan Steinberg, first drew attention on YouTube for their visually compelling music videos featuring inventive covers of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The self-titled EP includes these recordings as well as two new covers, Maroon 5’s “Love Somebody” and Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.”
“I love pop music but I wanted cover these songs in a different way, with a unique arrangement,” said Michaelson. “I chose songs that are ‘of the moment’ because I love being able to capture something at its height and put my own little twist on it. When people started asking how they could get the recordings we decided to make a few more and put them out.”
Michaelson, who is currently in the studio putting the final touches on her fifth solo album, paired up with friends Kuffner and Steinberg in 2012 to create ARMY OF 3 as a way to collaborate with artists she respects, do something different between solo records, and honor the pop music she loves.
In earlier reviews of ARMY OF 3’s Gotye and Rihanna videos, The Huffington Post raved, “The heart and soul of the performance is Michaelson’s singing… It’s amazing what you can accomplish with a good voice and some well-recorded hand claps.” Perez Hilton exclaimed, “Her voice is as sweet as ripe strawberries and we are TOTALLY digging this… Get your threesome on!” CBS News dared, “Truly fantastic… Go ahead and take a look and listen. I promise you’ll be glad that you did.”
Ingrid Michaelson has earned enviable name-recognition thanks to her knack for crafting beautiful, idiosyncratic songs, many of which have wafted out of your television in handfuls of Grey’s Anatomy episodes (not to mention countless other series since such as American Idol, Parenthood, and So You Think You Can Dance), in an affecting Google Chrome ad, and on VH1 as an artist You Outta Know. She has sold over 1 million albums and 5 million singles on her own label, ending up on the cover of Billboard Magazine as “the new paradigm” in the music industry. Her most recent album, 2012’s “Human Again,” was her highest-selling debut yet, reaching #1 on iTunes and Top 5 on the Billboard sales chart in its first week.
