Brooklyn based songwriter and producer Jonathan Dagan – the creative force behind J.Viewz – is thrilled to have his self-released and fan funded album rivers and homes. nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. The album, as pictured above, is packaged within a 26 page hard cover booklet of artwork, photographs, and lyrics.
The nomination is all the more sweet because of the involvement of the fans who helped fund the record, which originally began as a project Dagan dubbed “Work In Progress”. Fans subscribed to the project in order to receive new J.Viewz tracks, re-mixes, and music videos as they were finished. For Dagan this approach was positive on a few different levels. One of them was the immediacy of the process. Each song was recorded and released in the same weather, mindset, and period-in-life in which it had been conceived, giving fans an intimate real time look at the artistic evolution of J.Viewz. Another was the motivation that came with people paying for his music in advance.
Because of the fan involvement, and the motivation and feedback they provided during recording, Dagan describes them as his “Associate Producers”. Some of the subscribers who uploaded their photos to the “Work in Progress” project have their pictures included within the 26 page rivers and homes. cd booklet that was sent out to supporters as a show of thanks upon the albums completion, ahead of its release to the general public.
rivers and homes. has been described as an album that “deftly evades categorization,” (NPR World Café) and “for all its varied influences,” is a “cohesive work that showcases the talents of Israeli-born producer-composer Jonathan Dagan,” (Wall Street Journal).
