Rather than release “Song Reader” as recorded album, the always unconventional Beck choose to put the work out as a printed songbook. Since it’s 2012 release the songs have been performed around the world by various musicians, but never by Beck – until now! The concert takes place at The Barbican performing arts center in London. Visit online at http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=14970 for more details.
Jamie McDermott of The IRREPRESSIBLES will join Beck, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), Franz Ferdinand, Beth Orton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joan As Police Woman, Conor J O’Brien (Villagers’), Guillemots and more onstage for the once-in-a-lifetime event. The house band will include: Seb Rochford (Polar Bear) on drums, Tom Herbert (The Invisible) on bass, and Dave Okumu (The Invisible/producer of Jessie Ware’s Devotion) on guitar. Music direction by Ed Harcourt and David Coulter.
More on Jamie McDermott and The Irrepressibles:
The Irrepressibles is the creative work of artist Jamie McDermott. His voice is one of beauty, defiance, emotion, masculinity and gay sexuality. His provocative Farinelli-meets-Elvis style is readily compared to David Bowie, Jeff Buckley and even Grace Jones. From the front cover of Boyz magazine to features in Attitude, Gay Times, Italian Vogue, Vogue L’uomo and Dazed & Confused, McDermott is now somewhat of a nouveau international gay music icon.
The Irrepressibles began in 2002 as an art performance project. They gained a reputation for their now legendary art-pop before being signed to a label. Their performance “spectacles” such as the Human Music Box, Mirror Mirror and Air were commissioned by prestigious venues such as the V&A Museum, Holland Festival and South-Bank Centre. With a mantra to “make something that portrays the real originality, drama and intensity of life,” The Irrepressibles first incarnation was described by McDermott as a “performance orchestra,” that he choreographed and led. Nude is their sophomore effort and released to audiences in North America in February.
