Having completed her first solo sold out tour in Australia, Katy Steele set her sights on the US. Besides a few warm up dates, her upcoming performance at Joes Pub marks the first as a solo artist with her new band, performing songs from her brand-new forthcoming EP and album. The first single, “Fire Me Up” is available for free download HERE.
Lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Katy Steele and her band Little Birdy were one of the most popular acts on the Australian music circuit. LB toured extensively both domestically and internationally, and achieved one platinum and two gold selling records. Their most recent album, Confetti, debuted at number 6 on the ARIA album charts. However, even at the height of their success, Katy Steele began a new chapter on her musical journey and moved to Brooklyn, New York to find her own voice.
The aim was to discover a new inspirational place to bring her solo musical vision to life, and the relocating process was a motivating force. Going from playing to sold-out venues in Australia as part of Little Birdy, and having supported artists like Richard Ashcroft, R.E.M. and Bright Eyes, to playing in small venues near her Brooklyn apartment was the fresh start she needed.
“This rebirth has been most exciting because I’ve been able to fully realize a new sound and a new musical way forward. Being in control of the production and all aspects of my career has opened amazing doors for me.”
Katy is back, and ready to share her new strong sound that’s drawing comparisons to Karen O and Santigold. “This process has redefined what success means to me and now I can’t wait to share this new vision. I want to show everyone what I have created – and I cannot wait to go on tour.”
Much of the record was conceived in various apartments and studios around Brooklyn. The album then took shape when Joel Hamilton (Sparklehorse, Pretty Lights, Tom Waits) came aboard to produce in his Studio G Brooklyn studio. Two of the tracks from the record were also produced by fellow Australian / New York based producer/ engineer Andy Baldwin (Bjork, St Lucia).
You can catch Katy Steele playing with her new band on Friday, August 9 at Joe’s Pub.
