STAR OF JUPITER ARRIVES ON NOVEMBER 13TH

Wommusic has announced the upcoming release of the eagerly anticipated new album from Kurt Rosenwinkel.  Star of Jupiter – the acclaimed guitarist/composer’s tenth album as leader – arrives on November 13th.

Star of Jupiter marks Rosenwinkel’s first quartet recording in more than a decade, following 2001’s groundbreaking The Next Step.  Here the National Endowment for the Arts Composer’s Award-winner offers a contemporary variation on that classic ensemble work with a stellar new band that includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Justin Faulkner.

An intricately conceptualized collection of original compositions (all but one previously unrecorded), Star of Jupiter transports listeners on a remarkable journey toward transcendence.  Rosenwinkel’s virtuoso use of space is paired with deeply affective melodies and sensual grooves that defy easy categorization.  “Gamma Band”, the album opener, is a force of nature in 5/4 with a fiery propulsion from Faulkner, while “Homage A’ Mitch” sees Rosenwinkel paying homage to the multifaceted bebop of the 1990s West Village jazz scene where he first made his mark.  Among Star of Jupiter’s defining moments is the epic “Heavenly Bodies,” a spellbinding aural voyage that sees the band majestically orbiting a hypnotic vamp for more than half the length of the 11-minute piece.   With Star of Jupiter, Kurt Rosenwinkel once again displays the vision and brave artistry that place him among the most influential and inventive guitarists and composers of this or any other era.

With his trademark blending of guitar and vocalizing, Kurt Rosenwinkel is a singular voice in modern jazz, both a master interpreter of the standards repertoire and one of his most prolific and provocative composers of his generation.  The Philadelphia-born musician first earned attention playing alongside such iconic artists as Gary Burton, Paul Motian, and Joe Henderson, not to mention his role in the innovative quartet, Human Feel. He made his debut as leader in 1996 with the Kurt Rosenwinkel Trio’s milestone East Coast Love Affair, the first of what would soon become a remarkable body of diverse and distinctive works.  Rosenwinkel famously pushed the boundaries of modern jazz with 2003’s Heartcore, produced in collaboration with hip-hop pioneer Q-Tip (of the legendary A Tribe Called Quest), while other outside-the-box creative alliances have included partnerships with such unique artists as Eric Clapton, ?uestlove (of The Roots), Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, and Brian Blade.
