Less Than Jake Releases Unannounced Five-Song EP; Streams New Song On AbsolutePunk.net; Kicks Off Northeast Tour Dates Today

By on February 19, 2012

The wait for new music from ska-punk stalwarts Less Than Jake wasn’t long.

The Gainesville, Fla.-based band unexpectedly released today its second EP in the last 8 months, a five-song release entitled Season’s Greetings From Less Than Jake. An accompaniment to last summer’s Greetings From Less Than Jake, the new EP has five brand-new songs from the band that brought the house down on last year’s Vans Warped Tour. You can buy the EP here.

Listen to “Younger Lungs” at AbsolutePunk.net now.

Produced by Less Than Jake bassist Roger Lima at his studio, The Moathouse, in Gainesville, Season’s Greetings sees Less Than Jake continuing its long legacy of quality releases while still forging forward. The raucous opener “The New Auld Lang Syne” features a powerful, horn-driven melody that lends itself to familiar vocals from Lima and guitarist Chris DeMakes and just like that, ska-punk’s most recognizable band is at it again.

From the dark pop-punk guitar riff on “Younger Lungs” to the summery vibe of “A Return To Headphones,” it’s obvious that the Season’s Greetings title is merely a misnomer. The EP is a punk-rooted tour de force that could melt the snow off any cold Less Than Jake fan’s front porch.

“I feel lucky to still be able to make music with my brothers in Less Than Jake,” drummer/lyricist Vinnie Fiorello says. “To be able to do this at all is awesome, after 20 years, it’s incredible.”

Season’s Greetings is the latest release on Less Than Jake’s own Sleep It Off Records, as the group continues to pave its way in independence. The EP, mixed by Stephen Egerton of The Descendents, is available only from Less Than Jake’s online webstore and will also be sold at shows. Like with their summer EP release, the band never announced it was recording new music, so Season’s Greetings comes as a complete surprise to both loyal, lifelong fans and first-time listeners.

“The worst thing any band can do is stop making music,” Vinnie says. “Sitting back and not pushing the creative process forward just isn’t for us.”

As this release proves, Less Than Jake isn’t slowing down at all as it celebrates its 20th year of existence. In fact, the band embarks tonight on the beginning of its northeast run of tour dates with Samiam, Flatfoot 56 and Plow United, the dates of which can be seen here.

The band’s most recent activity was the Greetings From EP in 2011, the TV/EP in 2010, and the GNV FLA full-length in 2008. A music video for “Conviction Notice” was recently released, and you can watch it here. The band also posted a 20-year celebratory video here.
