Melbourne’s Big Scary Signs To Barsuk Records – New Album “Not Art” Set For release September 17th

By on June 16, 2013

Acclaimed Australian alt-pop band Big Scary has signed to Seattle’s Barsuk Records! The Melbourne-based duo of Tom Iansek  (vox, guitar, piano) and Joanna Syme (drums, backing vox) will join the esteemed independent label’s roster with the release of their forthcoming album Not Art on September 17, 2013.

“In our 15 years as a label, we’ve never worked with an artist from Australia, since it’s so logistically challenging for them to tour in North America,” explained Barsuk co-founder Josh Rosenfeld. “But the music that Tom and Jo make together is just too intelligent, original, sophisticated, and good to let geography get in the way. We’re extremely excited to welcome Big Scary to the family!”

Produced and engineered by Big Scary’s Tom Iansek and mixed by Grammy Award winner Tom Elmhirst, the album distills influences of indie rock song structure, pop and hip-hop production, and experimental ambient music. At its core, Not Art contemplates the artist’s journey, their search for meaning and their interpretation of and reaction to others’ art in the process of making sense of their own.

Not Art follows Big Scary’s debut album Vacation (a Triple J ‘Album Of The Year’ nominee) and features the new single Luck Now – currently available to stream via & YouTube.
