Also, for those of you that live in Los Angeles, don’t miss the band’s in-store performance at the Hollywood branch of the word renowned Amoeba Records. Following dates in Europe the band will tour North America later this spring. Upcoming tour dates below.
The Brooklyn trio’s seventh studio album The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy has been met with wide ranging praise. “Nada Surf have always had an ace in Matthew Caws’ voice,” write Filter, while The Boston Globe was won over by what they described as the album’s “non stop joy.” “Thanks to grungy guitars raging in the background,” write Alternative Press, “‘Clear Eye Clouded Mind’ thrashes like ’80s bar-band legends the Replacements, while the pogo-pop highlight ‘Looking Through’ and messy power-pop gem ‘The Future’ crackle with energy.” Relix wrote that for a band who last released an album of originals four years ago, “it’s notably re-freshing to receive any new tracks – let alone a set of songs as perfectly composed as the ones here.” NPR has hailed the album as “tremendous – full of big, blooming rock that practically glows with generosity.”
The video for “When I was Young” was filmed and directed by Phil Harder in the bands home-town, New York City. “Because ‘When I Was Young’ is about my childhood,” says lead singer and guitarist Matthew Caws, “I thought a video about a kid growing up in New York could be great. The only suggestions that went out to Phil were a kid growing up in NY and The Royal Tennenbaums. But he really got it right and more, suggesting and nailing things about childhood that I would not have been able to express. Otto is extraordinary in it. That he instills fun, makes it all the more poignant.”
Nada Surf’s lineup for 15 years has been and still is Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums), though on this album, as on recent covers album if i had a hifi and the tour that followed, they invited guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) to join in the proceedings. Chris Shaw (Wilco, Brendan Benson, Elvis Perkins in Dearland and Super Furry Animals) was brought in to produce and record, having worked with the band before when he mixed their hit song, “Always Love.”
