Sarah Jaffe is kicking off 2013 in a big way as Entertainment Weekly premieres the official music video for her latest single “Mannequin Woman” on their Music-Mix Blog. The visually stunning video was directed by Richard Krause along with Toby Halbrooks and David Lowery, who have previously been celebrated at the Sundance Film Festival and are currently filming Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, starring Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, and Ben Foster. The video premiere comes as the rising Texas star announces some select dates with Sargent House’s Chelsea Wolfe. The short run includes Jaffe’s first Los Angeles performance since the release of her most recent full-length studio album, the critically acclaimed The Body Wins(Kirtland Records, April 2012).

In addition to the video premiere and the new tour dates, this week brought exciting news of Jaffe’s s contribution to Disney/Pixar’s forthcoming short The Blue Umbrella. Scheduled to hit theatres in June of this year, the short is to be paired with Disney/Pixar’s Monsters University, the prequel to 2001’s classic Monsters Inc. The first look into The Blue Umbrella comes fromThe Wall Street Journal, who unveiled that the partnership between Sarah and Pixar stems from the film’s director Saschka Unseld, who had been a fan of Sarah’s for some time. In a conversation with Unseld, The Wall Street Journal learned that “when he shot an animation test on his iPhone, he scored it to her voice. Jaffe’s dulcet tones can now be heard in the final film. ‘She’s been there for me since the inception,’ Unseld said.”
Here’s what Sarah had to say on the collaboration: “When I was in San Francisco a few years ago playing a show, this very nice fella named Saschka came up and started talking to me after my set. At the end of our very short but pleasant conversation we both expressed a timid interest in collaborating at some point in the future. I’m not sure if The Blue Umbrella was even in the works for him yet but he ended up contacting my manager this past year about recording some vocals with Jon Brion’s score for his short. They invited me out to the amazing Pixar headquarters in San Francisco where I was privileged not only to see behind the scenes of many of my Pixar favorites, but to also listen to Saschka’s vision for his short in the early stages. A few months later I was recording with Jon Brion, pinching myself. The whole experience was wonderful.”
Besides her time spent with the folks at Pixar, Sarah had a full and fruitful 2012. With the release of her latest full-length The Body Wins in April, she won critical acclaim everywhere from The New York Times (“Full of scrapes and quavers, and capable of both Fiona Apple’s acidity and Feist’s suppleness”) to Elle (“a stylistically seductive, emotionally charged record”). After playing shows alongside acts like Norah Jones, David Gray, and Blitzen Trapper, Sarah released the album’s second single, “Mannequin Woman” and found herself making her late night TV debut with a performance of the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in December.
