Hot on the heels of their first release for Bristol’s freshest independant label Reel Me Records – the infectious political anthem ‘Crazy’ – Laid Blak continue the partnership with their latest single and summer time festival classic ‘Whoa’, which is available to buy from June 30th.’Whoa’ is an unashamedly danceable track with a message grounded in the real world – ‘life’s hard in the ghetto, no dreams no jobs’. It takes a rare band to make the ghetto sound like the scene of a party, but when that band is Laid Blak, you want to be on the guestlist. For all the starkness of their worldview, they’ve managed to create the perfect early-summer soundtrack, and when the singer chants ‘it’ll get better’, you feel like the process has already started. Laid Blak cut their teeth on Bristol’s urban reggae scene, and were recently crowned the best reggae group in Northern Europe at the Rototom awards. Never ones to sit still, they’ve spent the last half-decade continually broadening their style, and ‘Whoa’ shows just how far they’ve come, fusing elements of funk, rock and bhangra in a giddily uplifting rush of sound. Built around a bass riff as tight as elastic stretched to breaking point, it’s a crunchy, breathtakingly produced track that smacks against the speakers with maximum force. If this is the shape of the summer to come, we’re in for a great one.
