Devin Sinha grew up in the Midwest and got his degree in Computer Science, which makes his status as a singer-songwriter in Seattle all the more surprising and delightful. After being introduced to music by dabbling in piano and trumpet in his youth, Sinha picked up the guitar in the high school and worked hard at teaching himself how to play. Drawing on influences by artists such as Dave Matthews Band, The Decemberists, The Mountain Goats, and Josh Ritter, Sinha began trying his own hand at writing and performing music while at university for friends and family before deciding to release his first album.
The Albatross (2013), Sinha’s first self-produced effort, explores relationships gained and lost but also pursues more abstract ideas and larger themes, such as the cost of war and reflections of literature. A largely solo piece, The Albatross largely features Sinha on vocals and guitar.
With his latest album, The Seventh Season (2014), Sinha takes his ideas another step forward. Acoustic is not the only flavor of the day, as electric guitar and well-placed drums drive the addictive indie-pop beats. Back-up vocals enhance the tracks and sometimes branch into three part harmonies that fill out the meaning of the songs. Sinha’s diverse background informs the wide spread of The Seventh Season which, in addition in traversing multiple genres of songwriting, also spans between the West Coast and the Midwest. The seasons themselves are a motif throughout the album, and the album was conceptualized during Sinha’s seventh season in Seattle.
Songs “Lone Elm Road” and “The Sigh of the Sea” draw in listener attention with narrative threads that act as miniature sketches of fictional wonder. You can take quiet enjoyment in the instrumental “Orion,” which evokes stargazing and the constellations without ever uttering a word. Sinha explores common themes but communicates them in a unique way. A thoughtful writer and reader, Sinha attempts to write his songs with the right words before he ever writes the music, and this can be heard time and again throughout the album.
No matter your mood or taste, The Seventh Season is bound to have something that will capture your imagination and leave you humming in the days to come.
Sinha can currently be found performing live around the Pacific Northwest.
“Devin Sinha’s song Lone Elm Road blends contemporary folk with a rock flair, telling the story of a man who sells his soul for a quick gain and how it comes back to destroy him in the end. The video features high action, quick shots, and thrilling acrobatics that perfectly suit the ebb and flow of the gritty electric guitars and driving drum rhythms of the track. Lone Elm Road is the second track off Sinha’s new album, The Seventh Season.” – Devin
