It’s auction time again for Songs For Slim, a non-profit project created to benefit former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who is still recovering from a massive stroke that he suffered last year. Last month’s auction of the Jakob Dylan / Joe Henry single was another success, with 270 bidders generating almost $5600 for Slim and his family. The continued generosity of everyone who has supported the Songs For Slim project is a beautiful thing and has been a wonder to behold.

This month we’re excited to announce a single with fantastic tracks from the legendary John Doe combined with a fascinating collaboration on the flip featuring the pride of Rhode Island, rockin’ alt-country champs Deer Tick, assisted by Grammy Award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter Vanessa Carltonand Scott Lucas (Local H).

Doe, co-founder of X, the legendary LA punk band, conjures up a raucous, smokin’ version of “Just For the Hell of It,” a rumbling rocker that was always one of the highlights of Slim’s live sets over the years. Doe worked with Songs For Slim go-to producer Joe Henry, recording his track in North Hollywood with the A-team crew of studio musicians that have distinguished themselves so well on several previous SFS releases (Jennifer Condos, Jay Bellerose, Greg Leisz, Keefus Ciancia and Val McCallum). On the flip is an inspired endeavor featuring Deer Tick with Vanessa Carlton and Scott Lucas, a “strange bedfellows” group of friends who recorded their wild and swingin’ version of Slim’s “From the Git Go” in Nashville.

The John Doe / Deer Tick single is limited to 100 beautifully packaged, numbered copies and, like all SFS releases, features original Chris Mars artwork on the picture sleeve. All copies will be signed by Deer Tick and John Doe. As an added incentive, the person with the highest final bid on all of these auctions will also receive a complimentary pair of beautiful and masterfully-crafted wooden headphones, courtesy of LSTN. This auction will be accessible via SongsForSlim.comand will run June 15-22.

Planning is currently underway for a CD compilation of all the various Songs For Slim 45 releases (+ bonus tracks), including the two Slim songs on the Replacements EP that kicked off this whole project. Release date will be later this year. Stay tuned for further details

Reminders: The 12-inch vinyl version of The Replacements’ Songs For Slim EP (same track listing as the limited 10-inch auction version but without the deluxe packaging) is now available through regular retail channels everywhere. Also, all Songs For Slim releases are now available digitally via iTunes and Amazon with the exception of the special Record Store Day release which won’t be available digitally until July 23 due to the standard 90-day RSD exclusivity agreement.

Up for auction next month: a most exciting release, a single featuring Pixies front man Frank Black backed by Minneapolis punk legends The Suicide Commandos paired with a contribution from Australian alt-rock giants You Am I.

Don’t forget about the Songs For Slim online store:, which is selling t-shirts, slip mats, bracelets and necklaces, with specially-priced bundles also available. Like all SFS projects, all proceeds go towards assisting Slim and his family.
