America’s premier independent comedy label, Stand Up! Records (http://www.standuprecords.com) announced today not one but two significant milestones in celebrating both their 10th anniversary and their one hundredth release in 2013.
Stand Up! Records manifesto is to bring the best, funniest and most thought provoking comedy to fans by releasing material from both well established as well as up-and-coming new comedians. New albums from Geoff Tate (I Got Potential), Ray Harrington (The Worst is Over), JT Habersaat & The Altercation Punk Comedy Tour, Danny Lobell (Some Kind of Comedian) Dylan Brody (Writ Large), Brendon Burns (Pompously Lectures America) and David Huntsberger (Explosion Land) are confirmed for release this March and April. These new breed of comedians are very much the next generation of iconic comics who have also released albums via Stand Up! Records including Lewis Black, Doug Stanhope, Hannibal Burress, Patton Oswalt, Marc Maron, Greg Proops, Maria Bamford and other mirthful jesters.
Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and run by the one-man wrecking crew Dan Schlissel, Stand Up! Records is very much a labor of love turned expanding comedic empire. Part Alan Lomax, part Mad Magazine founder William M. Gaines and last part force of nature, Schlissel travels the country discovering new talent, and working with them to hone their act for release. Schlissel’s aesthetic for the label, means putting a premium on album art for both CD and vinyl packaging, commissioning noted artist Shepard Fairey to design the label logo, putting on the first comedy festival in Mexico known as the Akumal Comedy Festival (www.akumalcomedyfestival.com) and much more. In fact, Stand Up! Records even eschews traditional retail distribution by selling digital releases via iTunes and physical product direct to stores, as well as direct to fans at shows.
“The best thing about running Stand Up! Records in 2013 is that I’m able to release records by brand new comedians as well as well known names,” said Dan Schlissel, President of Stand Up! Records. “I don’t have (or need) traditional retail distribution so I am able to be nimble and release things quickly via digital download but also make a triple vinyl LP if the project warrants it.”
As a fan of comedy and comedy records of his youth from the likes of Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy and Sam Kinison to Israeli comedy troupe HaGashash HaHiver, Schlissel founded the label to help fuel his creative itch. By combining the things he loved: comedy, great art, producing cool stuff, discovering new talent and creating merchandise for the site that follows a simple credo: If I like it, I’ll make it.
