Fresh off the release of her powerful debut music video for her latest single “TEARdrop”, UK Future Soul artist and multi-instrumentalist,TAWIAH, releases a new song, “FACes” (produced by Jodi Milliner). “FACes” is the second single from her anticipated upcoming release FREEdom Drop. Today, in support of International Day for Street Children and Street Child Africa, Tawiah premieres the official video and offer fans a free download ahead of the project’s April 30th release date.
The International Day for Street Children campaign aims to give a louder voice to the millions of street children all around the world so that their rights are not ignored. The campaign is led by ‘The Consortium for Street Children’ of which Street Child Africa is a member. Street Child Africa aims to bring awareness to the disadvantaged youth in Africa.Organizations such as Street Child Africa and its sister charities are working to make International Day for Street Children a recognized day on April 12th.
“FACes” was shot in various parts of Accra, Ghana by Ghanaian film director, Mantse Aryeequaye for ReddKat Pictures. Mantse chose this location to show the city in a manner that hasn’t been explored, to tie together particular motifs and aesthetic that is only found in Accra; like art coffins / African art market. Old Fadama (aka Circuit City) is the third largest electronic waste dumpsite in the world. The young people who work there extract copper and other metals from used appliances and equipment by burning them in large fires and manually pulling out the copper cables for sale. Its an extremely toxic process, in that most of the scrap metal from all over the country are “digested” within this space, but still very hidden and disconnected from everything else.
Tawiah was first recognized sharing the stage with Grammy award winning producer Mark Ronson as the front woman on his 2007 world tour. Her voice has been discovered and admired by upper echelon artist like Cee Lo Green, Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Guillemots and Gilles Peterson. In 2008, her independently released debut EP, In Jodi’s Bedroom earned a cult following amongst Britain’s underground music scene. Ultimately, winning the Radio1 Worldwide Award for Best Newcomer and its singles were voted Radio1 Best Song of the Year and made iTunes Single of the Week. Her new project “FREEdom Drop” will hit the world wide web April 30th and is on pace to follow suit.
