Renegade English soul-rockers The Heavy have announced their upcoming North American summer headline tour. Beginning on Monday, June 10 in Washington, DC, the upcoming tour will take in 16 evenings and performances, including stops in major markets such as New York City on Wednesday, June 12, Chicago, IL on Sunday, June 16, Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, August 8 and many others. In addition, the band will be performing as part of a number of summer festivals including the Ottawa Jazz Festival in Ottawa, ON on Thursday, June 20, Osheaga Festival in Montreal, QC on Saturday, August 3, Outside Lands in San Francisco, CA, on Friday, August 9 and Squamish Festival in Vancouver, BC on Saturday, August 10. The Heavy will be on the road in support of its latest full-length release, The Glorious Dead (Counter Records).
In addition to the tour announcement, The Heavy also recently teamed up with multi-platinum recording artist Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in providing the music for ESPN’s three-day presentation of the 2013 NFL Draft from Radio City Music Hall in New York City from April 25-27. 50 Cent’s “New Day” and “We Up” from Shady/Aftermath/Interscope, as well as The Heavy’s “How You Like Me Now” and “What Makes a Good Man?” from British Independent label Ninja Tune, were used coming in and out of commercial breaks and in highlight packages of this year’s NFL Draft prospects. Both artists recorded customized lyrics that embody the theme of athletic success and of players achieving their goal of playing professional football. “It’s truly an honour to be associated with the NFL Draft,” frontman Kelvin Swaby said. “The event speaks volumes to our band. As all of the players selected for this event will know, the hours of practice, honing your craft, the discipline to take you to the next level, are all factors that get you to the professional ranks.” Check out the video of The Heavy’s collaboration with 50 Cent HERE.
The Glorious Dead is The Heavy’s third LP and the follow-up to their acclaimed sophomore record The House That Dirt Built (2009). Self-produced and with their unique, raw eclecticism fully intact, The Glorious Dead is their most fully-realized record yet, mixing together soul, hip-hop, rock, blues and funk into glorious, raucous party music that is equally full of heart.
The first single from The Glorious Dead, “What Makes A Good Man?,” was snatched up by Miller Beer for a national ad campaign (featuring the band in a dressing room cameo) and was performed on a number late-night television shows recently including The Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson and Last Call With Carson Daly. The song followed in the footsteps of the band’s sleeper hit “How You Like Me Now,” a track that has clocked up over 500K downloads to date and has been featured in countless advertisements. But there’s more to The Glorious Dead than just that, from the horror film atmospherics of “Can’t Play Dead” to the laid-back sincerity of “Curse Me Good,” the funked-up hip hop rhythm of “Big Bad Wolf” and the epic, heavy-hitting gospel rock ‘n’ roll of “Same ‘Ol.” Throughout, vocalist Kelvin Swaby’s voice soars, packed with yearning and pure soul.
