Versus vs. Verses We’re Not Who We Wish We Were
Released: April 17, 2014
Label: DIOFS Studios
On April 17th, Canada’s Versus Vs. Verses is releasing their debut EP, We’re Not Who We Wish We Were. The Oshawa duo of Mark Beitle and Brian Hatcher, who have collaborated for four years, independently recorded the six-song EP. Through conversation with Hatcher, guitarist and social media networker of the band, it was discovered that DIOFS Studios is an acronym for “Did It Our Fucking Selves”.
Just like the saying, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”, VvV pounds out impressive sound by the two self-determined performers. That sentiment repeats in ‘The Dark Water’ with the refrain of “Unless we find the way ourselves”.
‘Cosmonaut‘, the first single, resonates with a gritty chorus of “We’re not who we think we are, we’re not who we wish we were” echoing the name of the EP. The video for ‘Cosmonaut’ is presently in production.
Mark Beitle’s singing ranges from guttural screams and wails to more plaintive vocals such as those heard on the track, Old Timer. While the music was a joint effort, Beitle who plays drums, bass, guitar, and synthesizer, undertook the entire recording process, according to Hatcher.
Versus Vs. Verses, self-described as Experimental Rock, feels alt-rock and 80s heavy metal combined, with echoes of System of a Down and Dave Mustaine among others reverberating through each track. Lyrics that are emotionally intuitive and clever display the range of this pair. Haunting, even ethereal at points, yet still simmering with controlled metal angst, We’re Not Who We Wish We Were, introduces listeners to the harmony and dichotomy of Versus Vs. Verses.
