After three albums and nearly a decade together, instrumental post-rock quintet has honed a musical identity that makes them members of a club filled with similarly moody, orchestral-rock bands like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GYBE). And while it’s a sound that seemed to burrow underground for much of the mid-2000s, lately there’s been a resurgence of this kind of sonic — heard in a rapturous and from GYBE in New York last year, and in recent work from bands like Sigur Ros and the xx.
The upcoming release from Caspian edges them ever closer to the most well-known of instrumental rock groups — deliberately. The band spent a year making recording and mixing the record with producer Matt Bayles — best known for his work with heavier outfits like , Isis, and the proggier group .
“Waking Season,” the album’s title track, is a slow burner, and a clear introduction to the group’s strong new statement. Listen to the song exclusively here, and watch the album trailer below. comes out on September 25th.
“…A quintet from Beverly, MA, Caspian plays transcendent orchestral post-rock. Their latest album Waking Season comes out September 25th via Triple Crown Records. You’ll find yourself listening to a song and think “cool, there’s totally elements of heavy metal there” whereas other instrumental groups (*cough* Explosions in the Sky) can induce fantasies of punching a hippie….”
“The effort, a follow-up to the band’s 2009 album Tertia, was produced by Matt Bayles (Isis, Mastodon) and collects instrumental numbers that feel like less morose cousins of Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. “Halls Of The Summer” is an airy number that balances a twinkling melody with darker, gloomier undertones.”
